Well, I guess I'll share some opinions about plugins I personally use:

1) First and foremost, I obviously use my own plugins from http://photoshop.msk.ru/ But remember that I'm the author, so I'm biased and you shouldn't trust me :-) Some plugins are free, some not.

2) http://www.redfieldplugins.com/ - not for everyday use but some effects are quite cool, and overall plugin programming quality is excellent. Some plugins are free, some not.

Ok, let's start with some additions to the list:

3) Paint Engine from http://fantasticmachines.com/ - weird painting effects. One feature I like especially is "Wrap Edges" processing for seamless textures. Freeware.

4) http://www.imageskill.com/ - their new stuff seem to be promising. Shareware.

5) Finally, Deep Paint available through download.com -

Although its plugin part seem to have problems with FW, you still can use it as standalone app. Cool painting features. Now available for free.

Thanks for the resources for plug-ins, but I often find that many of the Photoshop plug-ins I find (or have accumulated over the years) do not work in FW. I copy the .8bf file into the appropriate directory, make sure Fireworks is pointed at it, and then nothing appears in the Live Effects menu.

A good example is the pixelate plug-in from Richard Rosenman:

I saw a tutorial on how to use it with Fireworks, downloaded and unzipped it, copied it to the plug-ins folder, pointed Fireworks at it, and nothing. I have a few PS plug-ins that *do* work in the same folder, and they appear in the Live Effects menu, so I know I'm putting them in the right place.

Why do some plug-ins work and others do not? Is there any way to tell which will work and which will not? Is there some other magic installation step to get them to appear in the list and word? Pixelate in particular was frustrating, because I saw a tutorial on how to use it in Fireworks, and then I couldn't get it to work.

I know that not all PS plug-ins will work, but I also suspect that I may be doing something wrong in the installation or use of them.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Dave,

A lot of the PS plugins don't work as Live Effects, they only work under the Filters menu. I remember the first time I installed a bunch of PS filters and because I never even think to use the Filters menu most of the time I didn't even know I had them installed for months. Richard Roseman's filters I think all work only under the Filter's menu, unfortunately.

Of course that begs the question why some filters only work under the Filter menu (as destructive bitmap filters) and some can work as live effects, and in fact some filters only work as live effects. Obviously it has something to do with technical limits of the filter format used, but it seems it should be possible to "trick" any filter into being live, since the filter itself is just a black box that takes input and gives a result.

Doh! For some reason it never dawned on me to look in the Filters menu. I never use destructive filters, and just totally forgot that might be where they were.

I've been spoiled by live effects.
