I am finishing off a brochure design project which someone else started. The previous designer used Fireworks, so after reading a few posts on this forum I thought the best way to get it CMYK and check the dpi was to save it as a PDF and then open it in Photoshop. It works fine for the mojority but I am having issues with layers that have gradients on them converting to solid colour and some images having black boxes round them when before they had a transparant background. I usually use InDesign and have no idea whats going on so any help would be appreciated!

Yeah, PS has issues with FW gradients. If you don't need to edit the gradients, you could flatten all gradients and then save it as a PSD and open it in PS. Otherwise you'll have to recreate the gradients in PS.
