to answer your question is easy
- practice tutorials
- find websites or graphics and try to recreate them
-practice tutorials
-practice
- did i mention practice?
there is a locked post in the tutorial section of this site.. with a list of tutorials, thats a good place to start, then there is the gallery section with fw png sources than u can de construct and see how they were made, and you can post your question in the forum, upload your png and we will be more than happy to assist.
and dont forget to practise some more... but make sure u take breaks, dont get frustrated and be willing to learn and try new things

For resources, i suggest you first visit the official adobe fireworks website , developer center, adobe fireworks tv , sample files , etc, there are tons of official content there and the articles are frequently updated.

You can also visit fireworkszone, the largest collection of fireworks resources ever collected , its updated too.

No kidding! It's not easy to find books on Fireworks, especially if one doesn't live in the US. Photoshop users don't have such problems, I bet. :/
Anyway, there are a couple of recently published books that you might want to check out:
Foundation Fireworks CS4 has been published this March, and it shows how to learn Fireworks and use the app. It even has some real-life case studies where Fireworks has been used.
Another good recent book is Adobe Fireworks CS4 How-Tos: 100 Essential Techniques by Jim Babbage. It's not so much a technical manual but a practical guide to frequently used Fireworks techniques.
As for online tutorials, I've started a collection of links to useful Fireworks tuts, displayed here, along with my own Fireworks tutorials over here.
Most of all, learning Fireworks goes quickly when you enjoy what you're doing. So, good luck and have fun!

I'd highly suggest picking this up. Lots of good tips and tricks and its not your average beginner book for software as it extends into teaching you how to make fireworks work for you by building extensions for fireworks. I also endorsed it if that holds any weight for ya. I really like the book and it sits proudly on my bookshelf. Whenever I have some creative block or just get burned out I'll go read a couple pages of something interesting within it.

<shameless_self_promo> Community MX has many Fireworks tutorials, many of which are free. My second book, Fireworks CS4 Classroom in a Book is also out and it's more of a project-based book rather than a collection of tips.</shameless_self_promo>
Adobe TV also has many video tutorials on Fireworks.
Once you know the basics of the app, I agree that studying PNG files is probably one of hte best ways to really learn what FW can do.

I wish we could get a text file of all the shows at adobetv, surfing the site can be mind-numbing.

I got these 2 books and i can warmly recommend these to everybody. I've been using FW for ages and i still found lot of good stuff from these books. There are many tutorials in the net, its a totally different think to read book with chapters.
