Fireworks CS6 is a joke!

Bonjour y'all!

A year ago I posted a rumor about the fact that Fireworks CS6 was going to be dropped from the Adobe suite. Well, well, well, I am glad to see I was (partly) proven right. For those who haven't already, please download and install Fireworks CS6 trial and see for yourself that the new release is nothing short of a very very very minor (and expensive) upgrade. Clearly Fireworks is NOT the focus at Adobe, and only few resources are allocated to improve this super powerful but broken and dated piece of sotware.

So yes, CS6 was not dropped, but given the limited amount of support it is given, it might as well be.

The new features and much needed improvements in CS6 can be counted on one hand, and for the most part they're tweaks, not real improvements:

New CSS Properties panel: was already available as a plugin
New jQuery mobile theme skinning support: seriously, is that really what we need??
Improved performance on Windows & Mac OS: I have yet to see a real improvement, we will see if it still suffers from crazy crashes when dealing with big files
Quicker access to color: fireworks still suffers from a super convoluted color picker mechanic. No gradients on strokes, still???
Opacity support for Fill and Stroke: WOOOOOW, it's a bout time
API access: that's a good thing, I hope it means John Dunning and Aaron Beal will be able to extend and continue what they already do faster and better

Where are the real stroke vs fill color picker improvements? Better rich symbols? Free floating canvas improvement? Improvement of the application bar and obtrusive panel layout nonsense? Lion fullscreen support?

In sum, I urge all of you to send email to Adobe to ask that they really improve fireworks CS6 or simply stop using it. Viable alternatives are on the way. I'm in contact witht the developer of sketch and I think he's got his head in the right place . It's a new mac software with A LOT of potential. It doesn't yet have all the things needed to topple Fireworks and photoshop, but it's definitely on the right path. Its toolbar is always in context and out of the way, it uses native OS X UI elements and graphics rendering engine (core graphics), has an innovative exporting mechanic, has way better effects that can layer and are LIVE (when you change a color in the properties panel, you see the result instantly).

I urge you guys to take a look, I'm convinced Sketch is a glimpse of the future of modern UI design tools. The guys who did it are indie developers and are just 2. And they already cover 80% of Firework's functionality.

Switching windows with keyboard shortcut stopped working

I have Fireworks on two computers, both Macintosh. Now, the usual keyboard shortcut for switching between different windows of the same program is �Command + >� or �Command + <�. For some reason this isn�t working anymore on one of the two computers and I�m wondering if there is a setting somewhere that I�m missing? It�s not part of the Keyboard Shortcuts setting in Fireworks because I haven�t changed anything there (as far as I know). And as said, this is the usual standard shortcut that also works in other programs.

Any of you guys have a hint for me?

Output each image into multiple file sizes with a SINGLE batch command?

I'm using Fireworks CS5, I've found how to create a batch process and save it as a custom command. However, I want a single custom command to resize, rename and export each file I give it into several sizes. At the moment it appears I have to make a new custom command for each size output I want.

I'm trying to figure out if this is even possible. Maybe there's more of a loophole then a formal procedure. I am working on a rich symbol's script iteratively. If I update the script is there another way to update the symbols that are already in the document without having to delete the symbol from the Library and then drag and dropping from the Common Library and having to reposition and re-do everything? Seems like just dragging and dropping the symbol from the Common Library to the document, and then choosing replace, doesn't update the JSF file.

1) When I look in the Link field of a slice in the Properties panel, I see the different pages I have created, which I can select to link to. There is a list of some of them, and then a line, and then another list of them. What is the difference between the two lists of possible links?

2) What is the difference between a hotspot and a slice?

I am having endless problems with exporting my site, so perhaps the solution is related to the two questions. I am even wondering if I have a bug in Fireworks, as my interactivity is not exporting properly.

links and zoom problems with pdf export

I am exporting my website prototype as a pdf, but getting problems with the produced pdf:

1) Some of the slice links I create are not working. They just don't appear in the pdf.

2) The zoom level is different on each page, with some pages at 100%, while other pages at like 27% or 66%, which makes viewing the pdf very strange. Acrobat is changing its zoom level when I move to a different page.

How can I change something in Fireworks, and re export this so its a proper clickable pdf?

I don't know why but whenever I try to type something in a box of text with predefined width Fireworks will place oddly the letters until I get on a new row.

I seem to have to go to photoshop and apply an ICC profile (CHROMiX iPhone G1 Aug08.icc) to get a decent match.

Hi guys, I am trying to read a file from a Fireworks Panel.

I have the following javascript code:

From the panel I call the function like this:

(fwiolib is an object I previously loaded into memory which gives me access to a bunch of these IO functions. The text file is just a single line of text.)

As you can see from the commented console.log output in the above code the execution never makes it past the fileReference.readLine() call.

What am I missing?

Please view the attachement to know what I'm talking about.

So I want to create something almost identical to the attachement: the only difference is I want to use different logos and images.

1. Where can I download a quality wooden background like that?
2. How can I "blend in" the logos? They seem like they are carved/painted on the wooden wall. Should I just play with the opacity until I have the desired result?
3. Some of the logos seem like they got partly erased over time(check Starbucks, "Let's Smurf" or the coffee poster). How can I achieve that effect?

I hope you understand what I'm asking for. Please help me!

Deleting part of a shape

I usually make my layouts and designs using photoshop but there are some features in fireworks that I really prefer (not to mention vectors) so Ive been trying to use it but there are a few things that are really holding me back from being fairly efficient in it. First off in photoshop if I wanted to for instance make half of a rounded rectangle (flat bottom with right angle corners, and rounded top corners) I would simply make the shape, take the marquee tool, highlight the area I didn't want and hit delete. I know this is possible with fireworks by just making a rectangle, adjusting the corner roundness, and cropping out the area I don't want by making a larger shape of the area to remove. Is there another way of going about doing this however? Thanks.

Expoting FW HTM file and then using Dream Weaver

I have created a page in FW and have then exported for use in DW. THe problem is when I insert it as a FW HTML file and then load into a browser the slices created in FW are not flush with each other.
They have at times, small spaces showing the canvas. DW HTML file is attached

editing a button symbol: nudges it up and left by 1 pixel each!

everytime I edit a button symbol in place, and I double-click to just do that, the symbol moves up 1 pixel and left one pixel. On all pages! It drives me absolutely mad.

somebody found a way to prevent this?

also, would there be a way to move this button back to its original position on all pages in one go?

Using fireworks MX, I'm trying to clone a button where the text is set to the right of the button. Once cloned, I go to change the text and as soon as I do it changes the text position to the middle of the button. What am I doing wrong?

rollover behavior not working in Dreamweaver

Hi there. I've created rollover links in Fireworks on top of my header image. When I view them in the browser they work properly. After exporting it to DW and adding it to my page the links work but the rollover behavior doesn't behave.
I've read it's not best to rely on Firework's html but I don't think I can add these behaviors on top of an image (header) in DW.
Is it just the generated code not working?

Simple CS5 Control Question: Gradient Handle

Hi,

CS5 has an aggravating behavior re: Gradients.

It is very difficult to adjust the gradient handle on gradients, while keeping the handle directly
horizontal (x axis), or directly vertical (y axis).

In either cases the line of the handle skews slightly off axis, and no amount of adjustment or
trick seems to get it to want to cooperate.

It's not mouse related or driver related. Holding SHIFT does not seem to limit the behavior
to square axis either.

Is there a trick to getting this to just do what it should do. Thanks!

Hey guys!
I'm in the middle of learning Fireworks. I chose it over Photoshop because a lot of people say it's THE tool for web design. I experimented with it and I must say they are right. It really is an amazing tool for designing websites! But.. over the internet for every Fireworks tutorial there's 100 Photoshop tutorials. I mean, there's a huge amount of Photoshop resources and tutorials which would make learning Photoshop a lot easier.

But I was thinking.. Photoshop and Fireworks aren't so different after all. Could it be possible to learn Fireworks from Photoshop tutorials?
And the kind of tutorials I'm referring to isn't "How to use the pen tool" or "how to resize images". Not the basic stuff. I'm talking about tutorials that teach you how to design websites and logos, design principles, etc.

I'm re-designing my portfolio website. However i cannot figure out how do i suppose to create exactly same looking or better shadow in fireworks.

I have marked the part with red arrows. The shadow is irregular and it looks much realistic. Sorry, i cannot get any larger size image. Thats the only one i found on internet archive.
I'm new to designing so i would really appreciate step by step instructions. For e.g. What should be the dimension of my canvas etc. etc. lol
